Granted, simulating cinema’s first on-screen orgasm in 1933 is catchier than turning intricate sketches of birds’ wings into better aircraft designs. But the patent she co-filed in 1942 (for frequency-hopping spread spectrum, now the foundation of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), sat unused for two decades while she was on the MGM contract list.
